Window on Gaza is a documentary born from a virtual encounter between Hamed Sbeata, a Gazan filmmaker and journalist, and Malena, a filmmaker and entrepreneur in Switzerland.

Their connection develops through daily exchanges and the sharing of images and videos. At the heart of this story is Hamed’s gaze, the portraits he films, the anticipation of his possible evacuation, and the desire to live and hope that persist despite everything.

This approach explores the necessity of creativity and testimony when everything seems uncertain.

Window on Gaza est un documentaire né d’une rencontre virtuelle entre Hamed Sbeata, cinéaste et journaliste gazaoui, et Malena, réalisatrice et entrepreneure en Suisse.

Leur lien se tisse au fil d’échanges quotidiens et du partage d’images et de vidéos. Au cœur de cette histore se trouve le regard d’Hamed, les portraits qu’il filme, l’attente de sa possible évacuation, ainsi que le désir de vivre et d’espérer qui persiste malgré tout.

Cette démarche explore la nécessité de la créativité et du témoignage lorsque tout semble incertain.

The project began after Malena discovered Hamed’s work on social media, as the destruction of Gaza continued. A bond grew day by day, shaped by shared conversations and moments of life. The film arises from an urgent need: to document, to create, to connect, to survive.

The narrative undertakes to document Hamed’s possible evacuation (to Italy, France, Switzerland Canada…) and the path of his adaptation.

Le projet a commencé après que Malena a découvert le travail de Hamed sur les réseaux sociaux, alors que la destruction de Gaza se poursuivait. Un lien s’est construit au fil des jours, porté par les échanges et les moments de vie partagés. Le film nait d’un besoin urgent: documenter, créer, se connecter, survivre.

Le récit entreprend de documenter la possible évacuation de Hamed (vers l’Italie, la France, la Suisse, le Canada…) et le parcours de son adaptation.

SYNOPSIS

Hamed, a Gaza-based director and journalist, documents the lives of survivors – children, families, artists – who continue to exist under Israeli bombardment.

In Geneva, Malena follows his work, supports him from afar, and tries to make sense of her place in a life out on pause.

Their daily exchanges become the foundation of a documentary woven between devastation and reconstruction, between urgency and introspection.

The film follows Hamed’s work, the portraits he captures, the obstacles he faces, and eventually his evacuation and arrival in a new country.

Hamed, réalisateur et journaliste basé à Gaza. documente la vie des survivants – enfants. familles, artistes – qui continuent d’exister sous les bombardements israéliens.

À Genève, Malena suit son travail, le soutient distance et tente de comprendre la place qui est la sienne dans une vie mise entre parenthèses.

Leurs échanges quotidiens deviennent la base d’un documentaire tissé entre dévastation et reconstruction, entre urgence et introspection.

Le film suit le travail de Hamed, les portraits qu’il réalise, les obstacles auxquels il est confronté, puis finalement son évacuation et son arrivée dans un nouveau pays.

The film revolves around Hamed’s gaze and his camera. The images alternate between life in Gaza, the filmed portraits by Hamed, and life in Geneva. The narration is based on a visual and audio correspondence. incorporating photos, videos, and the voiceovers of Hamed and Malena. The entire story explores the strength to live and hope despite extreme conditions, and how creativity can become a bridge between worlds separated by conflict.

Le film s’articule autour du regard de Hamed et de sa caméra. Les images alternent entre la vie à Gaza, les portraits filmés par Hamed et la vie à Genève. La narration repose sur une correspondance visuelle et sonore, intégrant photos, vidéos et les voix off de Hamed et Malena. L’ensemble du récit explore la force de vivre et l’espoir malgré les conditions extrêmes, et comment la création peut devenir un pont entre des mondes séparés.

Swiss filmmaker, editor, and screenwriter of Sino-Mongolian and Egyptian-Lebanese origin.

Trained in directing, editing, and screenwriting, she has made award-winning short films.

She works across cinema and social engagement, exploring stories of memory, identity, and displacement.
